Paleo Hacks: Potatoes Are A-OK

Some super strict Paleo eaters seem to think white potatoes shouldn’t be part of the Paleo diet (with some pretty weak arguments I’ll be honest), but I’m here to tell you I’m a fan. Potatoes are delicious and have a pretty decent resume

So Mr Potato, you have the job. Here’s why:

  • White potatoes are definitely high in carbs and low in fat, but also have a really good nutritional profile of essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, B6, floats and magnesium. TBH, the nutritional info of a white potato compared to its less demonised cousin sweet potato is actually quite similar.
  • Yes they are starchy, but they are a good source of resistance starch. Resistance starch is digested more slowly. It ‘resists’ digestion in the small intestine, allowing it to travel to the large intestine where it becomes a prebiotic. Prebiotics are a food source for your healthy gut flora which then are able to multiply and regulate Your gut microbiome.
  • They are eaten in a unrefined, fresh state. Roasted, boiled, mashed or baked, it all tastes great to me!

Obviously eating them daily in French fry form from a Macca’s run or a bag of Walker’s finest isn’t on the approved list of potato just so you know.
