Paleo Hack: What’s the deal with Nutritional Yeast?

So I’ve used this in quite a few of my recipes over time and some of you have asked “what The fox hat is that?” So here’s the low down. First of all, don’t be put off by the name or the appearance. It looks like fish food and ‘yeast’ isn’t the most appealing word. It’s a popular ingredient for plant-based diets, but also great for Paleo or those avoiding dairy. It has a pretty awesome nutrition profile too:

Its low carb.

It’s a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids that aren’t produced by the body.

It’s high in B vitamins. B1 is good for nerve, muscle and heart health and helps to metabolise glucose. B2 aids good adrenal function.

It’s high in antioxidants.

It contains 2 types of carbohydrates that help fight infection and boost immunity.

HOW TO USE IT:

Nutritional yeast has a delicious savoury, umami flavour so it’s great for many things.

-sprinkle on salads or roast veggies.

– make a “cheese” sauce blending it with soaked cashews and other tasty ingredients.

– sprinkle on zoodles or other pasta alternatives like shirataki noodles.

– mix it into crumbing mixtures. Check out my schnitzel recipe HERE.

Find nutritional yeast in most commercial supermarkets (Spinneys, Carrefour), the organic supermarket, or health food stores such as Greenheart.
